How to implement a habit

The ability to create habits
Did you come in here to learn how to create habits? I'll surprise you. You can already do it!
Your brain naturally strives to conserve energy. As long as you can do something automatically and without your consciousness being involved, that's how you do it. Habitual behaviors are automatic because your brain has learned them by heart.
Another issue is what behaviors are triggered in us automatically. Do we want to perform the actions in question? Or do we not want to perform them, just "something" pulls us towards them? It is a habit. Habits can be changed, and it is easier than getting rid of habits.
If you have something written into your automatic behavior, you have to put a lot of effort into erasing it. On the other hand, if you put something else in its place, the effort is needed, but less. Simply put, some work to erase the old habit you don't need will be done by overwriting some new behavior.
If you write something in pencil on a piece of paper and erase it with an eraser, you can still read something. If, on the other hand, you write new text on that piece of paper, the old text loses its readability completely. Files that have been deleted from your computer can also be recovered because their content has been hidden after deletion. However, if you write the content of the new file in its place, the replaced content can no longer be recovered. It is similar in your brain.
Putting a habit into practice
Habits consist of not only the automatic behavior itself, but also the trigger that sets the habit mechanism in motion. An example would be walking into the kitchen.
People often have a combination of going into the kitchen and eating. Just looking in the refrigerator can trigger the habit of reaching for food. On the other hand, for what other reason to look in the refrigerator.
I have heard of people who do not smoke cigarettes in the car, but as soon as they get somewhere, they immediately light a cigarette. This happens automatically when the car door is slammed. At this point, they should make sure to do something else instead of smoking. If, of course, they would like to quit smoking.
People who want to eat less may simply enter the kitchen less often. Alternatively, when entering the kitchen, they may encounter a self-imposed obstacle that will remind them to do something else.
After a while, the new behavior will become a new habit. Just keep repeating it and your brain will do its job. Simply put, your brain already knows how to do it.
